  • Around the World in 80 Days

The Society are delighted to announce that they have secured the performing rights to stage a new version of the Jules Verne classic, Around the World in 80 Days, adapted by Toby Hulse.

This charming adaptation of a classic novel, the ultimate globetrotter's tale, is told in small scale with just three actors, but
transports its audience deep into the far-flung realms of the imagination.

The dates for the production, which will be staged in the Reid Hall, are Thursday 12th, Friday 13th May at 7:30pm
with a 2:30pm matinee on Saturday 14th May.

The production is being directed by Graham Hewitson and all the characters are to be played by Christopher Hewitson, Neil Paterson and
    Elaine Hewitson.

This promises to be old-fashioned storytelling in the best sense, with bags of laughs along the way.
Why not join Phileas Fogg, his manservant Passepartout, Princess Aouda along with a host of other infamous characters in what promises to be a memorable journey around the world.

  • Exciting Times

The plans have been approved, the builders are in, so its all systems go for the next phase in our quest to convert our present clubrooms at 132 East High Street, which the Society has owned since 1980, into a small studio theatre.

The conversion of the former snooker hall has commenced with a total rewiring and the addition of toilets.  The drainage works are underway at the moment and it is hoped that the initial works will be completed by the spring.  The next phase is the decoration, which members hope to undertake themselves.  All this means that we aim to put on our first performance in the new space in September 2016.

The work is being funded by a combination of grants, donations and the Society’s own funds.  While there is sufficient funds to cover the current works, unless significant problems surface during the work in progress, further funds will be required to complete the project.  The current funds are insufficient to cover purpose built seating and theatre lighting infrastructure, however, the Society is confident that makeshift arrangements can be made to overcome in the short term and that further fundraising will yield the additional £20,000 required to complete the project.

Members are all naturally very excited about the prospect of performing in the new space and are currently working on developing an exciting programme of entertainment for the first season in the new theatre.   It has been decided that there will be a Scottish theme for the first season and we hope to announce the programme in the near future which is hoped will attract substantial audiences.

As always, the Society is desperate to attract new members with lots of opportunities both onstage and off.  This is especially important at the moment with lots of painting to do in the short term.

Watch this space for updates in the coming months!
